Rowing: Second gets final spot for NZ women's eight

The New Zealand women's eight was the big winner on day two of heats at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in France.

Lake Aiguebelette boasted perfect rowing conditions for the second day in a row and some tough racing took place.

The women's quad started out in fourth and held that placing throughout the race, finishing behind Australia, United States and China. Australia advanced to the semifinals and the remaining crews, including New Zealand, will race in the repechages.

World Cup winners Zoe Stevenson and Eve McFarlane, of the women's double, demonstrated great power and won the heat comfortably to qualify for the semifinals.

The men's double of Robbie Manson and Chris Harris also made a solid start, and led through the middle of the race. France challenged in the latter stages and pushed them into second place. However, they will still progress to the quarterfinals.

The men's lightweight four inched their bow ball in front by the halfway mark and went on to dominate, securing a comfortable win and qualifying for the semifinals.

The final events of the day for the New Zealanders were the much anticipated men's and women's eights, both trying to move one step closer to Olympic qualification.

The women's eight finished second, executing a well timed race and moving from fourth early on to challenging the winning Canadian crew in the dying stages.

Its second place ensured a place in the final, with the chance to gain Olympic qualification by achieving a top five finish there.

The men's eight was right in the mix for the first half of the race but dropped off a little as the race progressed.

After giving it everything, the New Zealand eight finished fourth and with just the heat winner, Great Britain, progressing to the final, the Kiwis will contest the repechage tonight.
