Rowing: Inland rowers get share of medals

Rowing clubs from the Otago hinterland put on good performances at the South Island Club Championships at Lake Ruataniwha over the weekend.

Wanaka sculler Sasha Bruce had a fine performance, with a good win over Grace Scown, of St Hildas, in the under-17 singles.

She won in a time of 8min 48sec from Scown, who finished with a time of just over 9 min.

Wanaka and St Hildas clashed again in the women's under-17 double sculls.

Bruce teamed up with Wanaka clubmate Alexandra Winsloe, while Anna McAslan and Abbie Irving teamed up for St Hildas.

The two doubles fought it out stroke-for-stroke but Wanaka nudged ahead in the last stages to win by 0.84sec.

Wanaka's Greg Redai and Rob Saunders also continued their winning form in the novice double, taking the gold medal.

They then teamed up with Finn Meldrum and Matt Jackson, with Hanna Lumsden coxing, to finish second behind St Bedes College in the quad.

Dunstan Arm also took away a haul of medals.

Its crew won gold in the under-15 four, with Matt Enright, Sam Galletly, Mark Duncan and Issac Scherp leading the way.

Galletly and Duncan also won gold in the under-15 double.

It also won silver in the boys' under-15 quad, under-16 double, four and eight, taking its total tally to six medals.

Oamaru dominated the girls' under-16 events with a win in the four by Georgia Tangney, Brittany More, Loren Haggerty and Eilee Robinson and cox Tom Munro.

They teamed up with Lucy Fauth, Caitlan Kearney, Johannah Kearney, Bethany Robinson and cox Sophie Moynihan to take the under-16 eight.

The Kearney sisters also continued their winning combination to win the under-16 double in a time of 8min 2sec.

An Otago Boys High School crew took away the gold medal in the under-15 eight, with the crew of Joey Welham, Matt Parks, Jack Bloomfield, Robert Johnston, Nick Tipa, Tyler Veltman, Jack Waddel, Sam Hopewell and cox Aaron Woodhead crossing the finish line in a time of 7min 7sec.

The under-17 four of Matthew Mears, Tyler Veltman, Jacob Pairama, Josh Mulligan and cox Michael Sharpin also crossed in a time of 7min 7secto take the silver medal.

In the club grade, Otago University's Albert Hanson, Jamie Saunders, William Hyndman and James Harvey won gold in the men's quad ahead of Invercargill and Southland composite quads.

Hyndman also won silver in the men's club single in a time of 7min 37sec.

From fourth place at the 1000m mark, he fought his way to third equal at 750m and increased his rating over the last 500m, to sprint home to a clear second.

Michael Nisbet again dominated the open single, winning in a time of 7min 24sec, from Fergus Fauvel from the Southern RPC.

Nisbet teamed up with Robbie Mears, of Otago Boys High School, to take fourth in the open double.
