Rugby: King's goes to top of First XV comp

King's High School hit top form with a 13-try romp against St Kevin's College to retain top spot in the Highlanders First XV rugby competition.

King's controlled all phases of play when it beat St Kevin's 83-5 in Oamaru on Saturday.

It was a sound team effort,with the forwards winning good ball at the set pieces.

Prop Hayden Fleury played a key role in the strong Kings scrum and was aggressive with the pick and go.

King's loose forwards Junior Faavae, Tyron Pelesio and Petelo Faasae were dominant at the breakdown and quick in their support of the ball carrier.

The inside back pair of Caleb Gray and Gifford Henry controlled the ball and created opportunities for the backline.

Centre Paul Tupai, Pelesio and Fleury each scored two tries and Gifford converted nine of them.

Lock Simon Chittock was in top form and scored two of his team's eight tries when Otago Boys' High School beat Kavanagh College 49-7 at Littlebourne.

Halfback Kurt Hammer also scored two tries, while the player of the day was openside flanker Brodie Hume with his work at the breakdown and his support play.

The Otago Boys' pack dominated the set pieces and provided good ball for its exciting backline.

The upset of the day came when Verdon College beat Dunstan 7-5 in Invercargill.

In other games in the round (some played midweek), Southland Boys' beat Waitaki Boys' 51-0, Central Southland College beat John McGlashan College 27-22, and Gore High School beat  outh Otago High School 44-0.
