Dave Simpson's cup really does runneth over.

Simpson (23) has snared the quinella - playing a role in North Otago securing both cricket's Hawke Cup back in March and rugby's Meads Cup on Saturday.

North Otago claimed the Hawke Cup - minor association cricket's version of the Ranfurly Shield - for the first time with a 159-run win over Manawatu.

On Saturday, North Otago had an emphatic 39-18 win over Wanganui to clinch the Meads Cup at Whitestone Contracting Stadium.

Simpson, an electrician, said it was impossible to say which victory was more exciting.

"They were both equally as thrilling but they were different.," he said yesterday.

"It was probably more of a relief winning the Meads Cup.

"We sort of expected to do well in that.

"The Hawke Cup [was] probably a bit more exhilarating because we had absolutely no expectations of victory.

"The satisfaction of winning the Meads Cup, after working so hard towards it, was pretty satisfying."

It has been a golden year for Simpson, who shifted from Counties to North Otago about 18 months ago for work reasons.

Cricket had always been his main sport and he had no expectations of playing representative rugby when he moved south.

He had not played representative rugby in Counties.

It had been an "awesome" year - "you couldn't ask for more".

The lock admitted it had been a "big Saturday night", with even coach Barry Matthews out until closing time to celebrate the victory.

He was enjoying his rugby - "you just get swept up in the passion of the union" - and he believed rugby was probably a bigger part of the community than back home in Counties.

Yesterday, it was back to work for Simpson at Plunket Electrical.

While there had been some congratulatory messages and a few had been asking about the game, it was work as normal, he said.
