Life is a series of lessons.

Judging by the 40 minutes he put in on Saturday, Aaron Smith learned one pretty quickly last week.

Smith was a ball of fire after coming on at halftime behind the All Black scrum at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday night.

The Highlanders halfback had been demoted from the starting XV as he breached team protocol after the match with Argentina in Wellington last weekend.

He admitted he was embarrassed with how things transpired last week.

"There was definitely a point to prove. I had an obvious chip on my shoulder after the mistake I made.

"It is definitely something I would not do again," Smith said.

"Having that No 20 on my back is something you do not want.

"The All Black jersey is pretty awesome and I was out there to prove a point to get it back. It was good fuel but I wanted to be controlled and not try too hard."

Smith electrified the crowd with his 40 minutes for the All Blacks, including scoring the critical try midway through the half which broke up the game.

He ran round a couple of Springbok players before dotting down and being enveloped by supportive team-mates.

"The ball sort of popped out and I went to that side of the ruck. I saw a big African come across and I stepped round him.

"The coaches had talked to me after the Aussie game about playing what is in front of me. So I saw a game coming from my left, and used my step and backing myself went for it.

"I gave it a little bit of pre-celebration.

"Obviously, with the way the week started, at that moment I was feeling pretty good about myself."
