Sevens: NZ beats US to qualify for quarters

New Zealand have qualified for the quarter-finals of the cup at the Wellington sevens after a 17-10 win over the United States in their final Pool A game tonight.

The New Zealanders were slow to start after Nick Edwards put the Eagles on the board with a five-pointer.

But, New Zealand's veterans rallied and David Raikuna made a nice break to set up a try for Tomasi Cama on half-time.

In the second spell Ben Lam added another score for the Kiwis, which put the margin out too far for the United States to compete.

When Cama added added his second with three minutes left the USA's fate was sealed.

New Zealand had to win the game after they lost their opening match of the day to England 19-14 but they improved in their second outing with a 36-5 win over Spain.

Play gets underway tomorrow at 1pm and New Zealand will meet Australia in their quarter-final at 3.17pm.

New Zealand lead the world series standings after the first three rounds.

New Zealand 17 (Tomasi Cama 2, Ben Lam try; Cama con) United States 10 (Nick Edwards, Zach Test tries) HT: 7-5
