Otago will have its first proper hit-out of the season on Sunday but still has something of a makeshift look to its side.

The team is still nursing a few walking wounded from the club season and some players from outside the 28-man squad named on Monday have been called in for the game.

Japanese winger Aki Yamada has been named on the right wing with Buxton Popoali'i forced to move to the left wing.

Tony Ensor, who had limited time with the Highlanders this season, has been named at fullback.

Peter Breen will start at first five-eighth and Japanese international Fumiaki Tanaka is at halfback.

Paul Grant will captain the side and he will be joined in the loose trio by Hugh Blake and Lee Allan.

Tom Donnelly still has some leave, having ended his season with the Crusaders late last month. The locking positions are take up by a couple of faces from the past. Charlie O'Connell, who last played for Otago in 2010, will be joined in the second row by Ezra Taylor, who last played for Otago in 2007.

After an encouraging Super 15 season, Liam Coltman starts at hooker, with Pirates prop Craig Millar making his first start for Otago.

Promising University forward Josh Dickson has been bracketed on the bench with Gareth Evans. Young Harbour back Aleki Morris will take his place on the bench.

The likes of TJ Ioane, Donnelly and Tom Franklin still have to come back into the selection equation.

Otago will travel to Nelson on Sunday morning and come back straight after the game.

Otago has regularly played Tasman in pre-season matches.

Last year, it played Tasman three times during the season - losing the first pre-season match at Forsyth Barr Stadium but then winning the two matches that counted, the game in the ITM Cup Championship, and then the semifinal.

Tasman, which names its team today, had an encouraging debut on Wednesday, beating a Cantabrians XV 61-7 in Kaikoura.

The Cantabrians XV did not include any Crusaders and was made up of Christchurch club players, who could not keep up with the pace of Tasman.

Tasman has not lost many players from last year although experienced midfield back Andrew Goodman and exciting winger Peter Betham will not return. Filipo Levi is also not turning out for Tasman this year.
