Peter Breen sparked a revival of Alhambra-Union's fortunes when he returned from injury after the club had suffered five losses in a row.

His efforts were enough to earn Breen the club player of the year award, presented to him at the Dunedin club last night.

Breen's play has matured since he has been a regular member of the Otago training squad over the past two years.

He has become a dominant figure on the club scene with his tactical nous and his ability to spark tries from any part of the paddock.

But his most important asset has been his kicking, both tactical and for goal. At one stage, Breen had kicked 21 goals in a row and his individual points tally quickly mounted.

He scored 23 points in one game and followed that up with 26 points in the next game. He ended the club season with 196 points.

Otago Daily Times and radio club rugby correspondents award player points after every game during the season.

Breen finished with 26 points and was followed by Dean Moeahu (Green Island) 23, Tom Franklin (Southern) 22, Chris Bell (Zingari-Richmond) 20, Josh Dickson (University A), Nick Annear (University A), Sam Crompton (Southern) 19, Lee Allan (Kaikorai), Charlie O'Connell (Taieri) 18, Brad Weber (Dunedin), Craig Millar (Pirates) and Kieran Moffat (Taieri) 16.

Veteran halfback Moeahu retired at the end of the season after playing 221 premier games for Green Island between 1995 and 2013.

Southern first five-eighth Ben Patston was the top scorer with 225 points. He was the only player to top 200 points, but was short of the record of 260 points Daniel Soper (Dunedin) scored in 1997.

Taieri centre Moffat scored the most tries with 17. His tally included three tries in the semifinal against Southern but was well short of the record of 26 tries scored by Steve Dunn (Southern) in 1997.

Moffat won the ODT people's choice award ahead of Pirates prop Millar.

Coach Ed Baker led Dunedin to its 11th premier banner when his team beat Taieri 21-20 in the final at Forsyth Barr Stadium. It was the fifth time Baker had taken Dunedin to the final and was his second banner.
