Rugby: Scott shows size not so important

She is a welterweight going up against some heavyweights but Rachel Scott is a prize-fighter on the rugby field.

Scott (23) is a flanker for the Otago Spirit and does not let her frame - 66kg, dripping wet - stop her from lowering some heavy hitters in the opposition.

Last week, in the season opener, she sent some hefty Wellington forwards to the deck, helping the Spirit to victory.

It is not expected to get any easier against a big Waikato pack today.

Scott, who has been switched from openside flanker to blindside flanker for the game at the North Ground, said she had never shied away from the defensive side of the game.

''I've always tried to work really hard on my tackling. The more tackles you do, it gives you confidence to get in there and make some more,'' she said.

''I was pretty sore after last week's game but it was the first intense game I'd played for a while. I did not feel as fit as I should have been.

''To be honest, I felt we should have played better. We have structures in place but we could not put them in place.''

Scott has played for Otago since she moved to Dunedin to study in 2009.

Her love for the game started at an early age, following in the footsteps of brother Jason in Auckland. She attended Rosehill College, where she played rugby, and continued playing the game as she headed south.

Studying towards a degree in consumer food science, she hopes to finish this year.

In true student spirit, Scott took part in a nude rugby game in 2011, and was given plenty of publicity afterwards, which she was not expecting.

''It was a oncer, really. Just a one-off thing. I was not expecting the after effects to be what they were. My mum was not too worried. But I've put it behind me now.''

Scott said Waikato was expected to be tough and the Otago side would continue to work on moving the ball around.

Otago has had to make a couple of changes to its side because of injury.

Rebecca Todd starts at halfback, moving from the loose forwards, as Jenna Aikman picked up an ankle injury last week. Ele Lilo moves into the front row in place of Nicki Crawford.

Waikato started its campaign last week with a narrow 16-15 win over Counties-Manukau.

The Waikato side did it tough in the victory, as a road accident meant it did not get to Pukekohe until minutes before kick-off.

Chelsea Alley scored all the points for Waikato in the win and she will be one to watch, while at centre is Honey Hireme. She has played both rugby league and sevens for New Zealand and will be a livewire in the Waikato backline.
