Rugby: Grant may head overseas, now contract is up

Otago captain Paul Grant is considering his playing future and may head overseas.

Grant (26) has just finished an impressive ITM Cup season with Otago but it was not enough to attract Super 15 coaches and he missed out on a spot in any Super 15 squads or wider training groups.

When contacted yesterday, Grant said he was considering his options and there was a possibility of heading overseas.

But nothing had been confirmed. His Otago contract had finished at the end of the recently completed season.

Grant played the majority of the season at No 8 for Otago, and played well, but was surplus to requirements for the Highlanders at the back of the scrum. The Jamie Joseph-coached side has Nasi Manu, the new co-captain of the side, and Elliot Dixon, the Southland No 8, as its options.

Grant has played more than 50 games for Otago and led the team well this year, in a season where the side made the ITM Cup championship semifinals, only to lose to Hawkes Bay in a nailbiter.

Another No 8 not in the frame for the Highlanders next season is Jake Paringatai.

The loose forward came back from several seasons in Japan to play for the Highlanders last season but only started two games and failed to make an impact.

Though he has signed a two-year deal with the franchise, both player and the Highlanders had reached a mutual agreement for the contract to end early.

Paringatai (33) played in the ITM Cup for Northland this year.

Dunedin club halfback Brad Weber will not be playing in Dunedin next season, after signing a two year deal with Waikato.

Weber, who played for Otago in 2012 but was not picked for the squad this season, was subsequently picked up by Waikato and impressed for the Mooloos.

Along with the contract for Waikato, he has been named in the Chiefs wider training group.

Weber's club team-mate Liam Edwards has had another impressive season with Heartland side, South Canterbury.

Edwards (21) was the leading points scorer and try scorer in the Heartland Championship. He also did that double last year.

This year, he scored nine tries and 140 points while last year he tallied 10 tries and 141 points.

He was named South Canterbury supporters club player of the year.

Edwards (21) is weighing up his future, saying he has a couple of offers on the table from other unions but wanted to stay in Otago.
