Clutha stands out in trio of unbeaten teams

After two rounds in the South Otago premier competition, three teams - Clutha, Lawrence and Crescent - are unbeaten.

Of the three, Clutha looks the outstanding team. The forwards are working well and giving the backs plenty of ball to use.

A 55-5 win, and another by 49-27, indicates Clutha will be tough to beat this season.

Lawrence is also two from two and is moulding into a good unit.

The forwards are playing well and the backs are showing their pace and skills.

Lance Taylor, at halfback, has been impressive. His goal kicking has been excellent and his general play has also been good.

Crescent, also unbeaten, started the season on a high when it out-played Heriot in the first upset of the season.

Last week, Crescent was too strong for Owaka and cruised to a 30-10 victory.

Crescent may have a problem against Clutha, but against all other teams, it can be confident, and it looks as though it will make the top four at the end of round one.

The other five teams will battle away.

The team to improve the most has been Clinton, which was beaten just 10-8 by Clutha Valley, before a 26-25 loss to Toko.

In both games, Clinton earned bonus points.

Toko will always be competitive, and should win more than it loses. Clutha Valley has lost key players, but has talent on hand to fill the gaps.

Heriot is the team that has not fired, and languishes at the bottom of the table without a win.

Heriot lost key players from last season, and needs to fill these positions as it searches for a first win.

There is no South Otago rugby this weekend, because of Easter.

Games will be played on Anzac Day and April 26.
