It was a special moment for Ben Qauqau when he scored his fifth try for Alhambra-Union last Saturday.

He was the standout player in his side's nine-try, 57-5 romp over Green Island at the North Ground.

''I'm very proud,'' Qauqau said.

''But I just do it for the boys to win the game. The forwards played really well and I was lucky enough to be at the end of the chain. I worked hard for a couple of them but it was a good all-round team effort.''

It is not the most tries Qauqau has scored in a game. He scored 10 tries in an under-14 school game.

Qauqau, a winger, never dreamed of getting five premier tries.

''I just dreamed of getting one a game to keep ahead of my flatmate, Bryce Morgan, who plays for Kaikorai. As long as I'm getting more tries than him I'm a happy camper.

''Bryce was named man of the match the previous week for scoring two tries and he had me on about that. I told myself I had to get up today.''

Qauqau (22), a foundry worker, flats with Morgan and Otago ITM Cup fullback Tony Ensor.

He is extremely hard to stop when he gets inside the 22m and has the tryline in his sights.

''Anything inside the 22m, I back myself to get there. I'm not that tall, but I've got a lot of strength and am hard to stop.''

Qauqau grew up in Dunedin and was educated at John McGlashan College.

He played for Otago junior teams from under 48kg to under-18 and was in the Otago Maori team that won the South Island tournament in Timaru earlier this year.

His father, Pene Qauqau, also played premier rugby for Alhambra-Union and played four games for Otago in 1989.

''I never saw the old man play but he has talked about his rugby and given me a few tips,'' Qauqau said.

''He has been the greatest influence on my rugby.''

His rugby goal is to play for Otago and help Alhambra-Union win the premier banner.

He plans to attend the University of Otago next year and become a primary school teacher like his flatmate, Morgan.

Qauqau's feat was not a record for Dunedin club rugby.

Ten Otago University players have scored six tries in a game.

They are: Donald Macpherson (1907), Alex McMurtie (1908), Leo Welch (1917), Henry O'Connor (1918), Dick Webb (1928), Eric Smith (1929), Jim Watt (1936), Reg Maskell (1937), Steve Reaney (1966), Russell Ennor (1983).

Ennor scored his six tries against Alhambra at Opoho in the year that Alhambra was beaten in the promotion-relegation game by Port Chalmers.

Otago rugby commentator Paul Allison played first five-eighth for Alhambra that day and kicked a penalty goal to give Alhambra the early lead. University A won 79-6.
