Rugby: Mid-table teams slug it out

Four teams - table-topping Arrowtown and Upper Clutha A, along with 2013 champion Maniototo and White Horse Cup holder Wakatipu - remain unbeaten after three rounds of the Central Otago rugby competition.

But the focus at this point in the competition is not on the top sides but rather the middle-of-the-table teams, who are all tussling for a spot inside the top six.

All matches from this point are crucial for Alexandra, Clyde-Earnscleugh, Cromwell A and Roxburgh, because just two of these four sides will play in the top half of the draw when it splits on June 28.

Both Alexandra and Clyde-Earnscleugh have two wins from three matches so far this season, with Cromwell A and Roxburgh managing just one win each.

Bonus points will be a big factor in determining the top six teams.

Four-try bonus points will be essential in matches against the lesser sides and any losses need to be within seven points to get something from the game and keep pace with the leading teams.

The feature match this week is the clash between Arrowtown and Upper Clutha A, at Jack Reid Park tomorrow afternoon.

The pair are equal on points on top of the standings.

The other big game is at the Clyde Domain, where Clyde-Earnscleugh plays Matakanui Combined in its 125th jubilee match. The start time for this match is half an hour earlier than usual, at 2pm.

Other games include Cromwell A travelling to Roxburgh, a White Horse Cup encounter at Queenstown between Wakatipu and Cromwell B, and Wakatipu Wanderers at home in the early match to Alexandra. Maniototo hosts Upper Clutha B in Ranfurly.
