From Hancock Park to Murrayfield, Warren Kearney has come a long way.

Kearney, the former Pirates No 8 and New Zealand curler, scooped an honour at the Scottish rugby awards this week.

He was named the Scottish national league player of the year at a function at Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby.

Kearney's achievement was particularly meritorious as his Peebles club finished only seventh in the national league, one step down from the top tier of Scottish rugby.

The club tweeted its congratulations to its New Zealand star, referring to him as an ''outstanding player and top bloke''.

Kearney (29) works for the Peebles club as its rugby academy manager, dealing with players aged between 14 and 19. He was previously at the Bury St Edmunds club.

Originally from Ranfurly, Kearney was a durable loose forward for the Pirates premier side in Dunedin club rugby, and worked for the Otago Rugby Football Union as a development officer.

He was also a regular member of the New Zealand curling team when he lived in Otago, and competed at both the Winter Games and the Pacific championships.
