He is fast becoming a super-sub but Beauden Barrett is still itching to get the black No 10 on his back.

However, the Hurricanes first five-eighth knows it is not going to come quickly or easily.

''Any time at first-five or off the bench it will be cherished. Time will tell. I will find out on Thursday,'' he said.

''I just appreciate any time I can get. If I am number two at the moment then I am number two.

"I've got to earn that starting position At the moment if it means coming off the bench then I've got to make an impact and play well.''

Barrett has played well in the pivot position for the Hurricanes this year but Aaron Cruden appears to be favoured and Dan Carter makes his return to competitive rugby on Saturday.

''I've had a whole season with the Hurricanes in the No 10 position. It would be great to have the black jersey there but they don't give those jerseys away too easily. So I have to earn it.''

He said coming off the bench did not place undue expectations on players.

''I guess I have an expectation to do well whenever I get on the field. My game is to run the ball and have a crack. I have plenty of opportunities to have a crack.

''The bench likes to make an impact and has to make an impact but you don't have to do anything out of the ordinary.''

All Black loose forward Liam Messam said a tough training in wet, cold conditions yesterday at the University Oval was different than the conditions the team was facing on Saturday.

''We're lucky enough to be under a roof on Saturday. I think there was a stat going round there are a few more points scored when you play in Dunedin.

"I think there is a bit more running rugby and it allows you to do that in the conditions to play under,'' Messam said.

''When we drove past it today we told the driver to turn right but he kept going. But there is nothing wrong with going out and training in the cold and wet. The boys enjoyed it.''

Messam said the loose forward trio complemented each other on Saturday night but there was still plenty to work on.

''Jerome [Kaino] in his first game back was sensational, Richie was Richie.

But we are just working hard trying to get the combinations going.

Asked about his own performance, Liam said he was simply ''Liam''.

''Plenty of running around, tired after the game.''

The All Blacks will make two more public appearances to meet fans for an hour on Friday from 11am.

Spokesman Joe Locke said three players would meet fans at Barkers in the Meridian mall and three would meet fans at Champions of the World in George St.
