Beauden Barrett will likely decide next week whether he will stay with the Hurricanes or move to the Blues.

The in-demand first-five is off-contract in the capital and it's understood he has been courted by the Blues while the Hurricanes will be desperate to hang on to the talented playmaker.

Few people are as important to a successful Super Rugby side as a quality first-five and the Blues are a franchise that haven't had stability in the No 10 jersey since the glory days of Carlos Spencer.

"I think having the bye next week, we'll have time to look at my options and take it from there," Barrett said yesterday.

"I'm pretty happy with how things are going here at the Hurricanes, so my mind's on the game this week and it's a pretty big game for us."

The fifth-placed Hurricanes meet the Chiefs in Hamilton tomorrow night (fri) and given Barrett is known to be weighing his future, the game could have an impact on the franchise for years to come.

If Mark Hammett's side were to win, they'd likely guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs, which would make it harder for Barrett to turn his back on a side he has helped drag from three years of mid-table finishes to the post-season.

Chris Boyd and John Plumtree will take over the coaching reins at the Hurricanes next year and Barrett has worked with Boyd in the past, while there is less clarity around who will be assisting John Kirwan at the Blues in 2015.

"I just love getting the game-time that I'm getting at the moment," Barrett said of his desire in a Super Rugby destination. "Obviously you've got to look at the playing personnel around you, coaching. It's all about developing your game; whatever franchise can help you best do that is a big factor."

Meanwhile, Hammett got some good news yesterday when hooker Dane Coles came through training without discomfort.

All three of the Hurricanes hookers were in doubt with injury ahead of tomorrow's game but Coles will start with Ash Dixon set to sit on the bench. Motu Matu'u remains on the sidelines with a shoulder problem.

Second-five Alapati Leiua needs further scans on his ankle and has been replaced by Hadleigh Parkes, while No 8 Victor Vito is out tomorrow with a calf injury but could return in time for the playoffs if the Hurricanes, who have the bye in the final round of the season, were to qualify.

Brad Shields will start at the back of the scrum in Vito's absence.
