Rugby: OBHS racks up 50 wins on end

Otago Boys' High School celebrated a 50th consecutive win in the Highlanders First XV competition when it beat Menzies College 53-7 yesterday.

The game was delayed a day to cater for the Menzies ball on Friday night, and Otago Boys' made no race of it, leading 33-0 at the break at University Oval No 5.

Otago Boys' has not been beaten in the competition since 2011 and is a heavy favourite to win its fourth title in a row.

Otago Boys' has a tough game next week against Southland Boys' High School in Invercargill.

Midfield back Sio Tomkinson scored 20 points yesterday and has now scored what is thought to be a school-record 213 points for the season in just 14 games.

John McGlashan College got back on the winning track when it beat Mount Aspiring College 43-12 on Saturday.

Centre Seveci Nakailagi Naisilisili used his strength to score three of McGlashan's seven tries in Dunedin.

The other tries were scored by wingers Sean White and Reece Stockhouse, second five-eighth Josh Timu and first five-eighth Thomas Johnson, who also kicked four conversions.

McGlashan led 26-7 at halftime through the work of lock Sam Jopp, who was mobile around the paddock and had a high work rate.

Mount Aspiring was competitive up front but McGlashan was too quick in the backs and found holes in the defence once the first line of defence was breached.

King's High School won its third game in the top-eight competition when it beat Waitaki Boys' High School 30-17 in Oamaru.

Fleet-footed fullback Taylor Haugh scored two tries. The other King's tries were scored by winger Luke Maker, halfback Joel Meade and tighthead prop Himiona Wilson.

Key players in the King's pack were hooker Joe Cairns-Thomson, who led from the front, and prop Sidney Fidow.

King's led 18-0 at the break but Waitaki Boys' came back strongly in the second half to score three tries in the last 15 minutes.

South Otago High School scored six tries when it beat Dunstan High School 36-17 in Balclutha to remain unbeaten in the bottom-six competition. Winger Tyler Ford scored two tries and centre Matt Whaanga kicked three conversions.

South Otago led 19-0 at the break but Dunstan came back strongly in the second spell to score three tries, to No 8 Cody Laing, centre Canaan Napier and winger Jayden McLew.

Southland Boys' High School thumped St Kevin's College 55-5, Central Southland College beat St Peter's College 23-20, and Gore High School downed James Hargest College 18-15.
