Zingari-Richmond midfielder Lachie Moore scooped the pool at the Dunedin club rugby awards at the Green Island club last night.

He was named both player of the year and players' choice, and was recognised for scoring the most tries (17).

Moore (24), an apprentice electrician in Balclutha, gained the most player points in his first season of premier rugby in Dunedin.

Moore scored 25 points and was followed by Charlie O'Connell (Taieri) and Ricky Riccitelli (Southern) 22, Sione Teu (University A) 21, and Mateo Malupo (Harbour) and Michael Collins (Taieri) 19.

The Otago Daily Times has kept detailed records of club rugby since 1976, and the 17 tries Moore scored this winter ranks him fourth-equal on the try-scoring list with Southern's Paul Turner (1994) and Taieri's Kieran Moffat and Kori Rupene (2013).

Steve Dunn (Southern) holds the record with the 26 tries he scored in 1997. He is followed by University A's Hayden Reid (1999) and Roy Hawker (2000) with 19.

Moore was followed this year by Rupene and Moffat, who both scored 15 tries, and Bryce Morgan (Kaikorai) with 13.

The keys to his try-scoring success were ''a bit of vision and support play,'' Moore said.

''I just finish off the good work that other guys have done.''

Moore, who scored 25 tries for Clutha Valley in 2012, could not play rugby last year because of shoulder surgery.

He played for the South Otago High School First XV from 2005 to 2007, and had three years in the Clutha Valley premier side in South Otago.

Travelling to Dunedin for club rugby has been a successful venture for Moore.

''I've thought about it for a long time, to test myself against the big boys,'' he said.

''It's been beneficial for me, for sure.''

He has found club rugby in Dunedin a step up from the standard he experienced in South Otago.

''It's quicker and more physical than I was used to,'' Moore said.

Moore travels to Dunedin from Balclutha each week with team-mates Josh Botting (halfback) and Chris Preddy (prop) to play for Zingari-Richmond.

The biggest influence on his rugby has been his father, Ken Moore, a Clutha Valley stalwart.

Lachie Moore has impressed the Zingari-Richmond coach, Andrew Melville.

''He's the best 12 our club has had for a long time,'' Melville said.

''As he develops over the next couple of years, he will be pushing for an ITM Cup spot.

"He has extra pace and is very quick off the mark and is very good at bursting through tackles.''

Moore's goal in rugby is to make the Otago ITM Cup squad.

The top scorer in Dunedin premier rugby this season was Greg Dyer (Dunedin), with 191.

He was followed by Peter Breen (Alhambra-Union) 173, Josh Casey (Taieri) 160 and Cam Rutherford (Kaikorai) 153.

The personality of the year was John Burke, of the University club. The top referee was James Doleman.

The guest speaker at the awards night was Hayden Croft, the analyst for the Otago team in the ITM Cup.
