Lawrence claimed the countrywide club title with an 18-7 win over Maniototo on a greasy ground in Lawrence on Saturday.

Lawrence dominated the first half and had a 15-0 lead at the break, due mainly to a superb forward effort. Maniototo came back in the second half, but Lawrence defended well.

Stu Melville kicked a penalty after six minutes and, halfway through the spell, Lawrence went on the attack. Lock Mark Homer picked up the loose ball and sprinted to score the opening try under the bar.

Right on halftime, Sam Wyber crashed across in the corner to give Lawrence its commanding lead at the break.

Lawrence continued to dominate, but Maniototo was beginning to get a bit more ball.

After 20 minutes of the second half, flanker AJ Paton scored under the bar. Charlie Hore's conversion made it 15-7, and the game was all set for a good finish.

Five minutes from fulltime, Melville kicked a good penalty for Lawrence to make the game safe.

For Lawrence, the man of the match was first five-eighth Melville, who kicked intelligently, fed the backline well and defended strongly.

Halfback Lance Taylor was another to impress, while Sam Wyber and Danny van der Voort had strong games in the midfield and Sam Cross showed excellent positional play at fullback.

The Lawrence forwards were superb. Will Hurst, Ben Young and Pete O'Malley led the way in the loose, while Homer dominated in the lineouts. Up front, Stu Young, Sam Smith and Sam Hislop set a sound platform.

Maniototo's forwards tried hard, with Paton the standout player. Logan Dowling and Tim O'Neill were tireless workers.

In the backs, Hore was deprived of the ball in the first half but, in the second, he showed his capabilities. Mitchell Lake defended well in midfield.
