Rugby: Departures aplenty to follow next World Cup

As news leaked Ma'a Nonu is heading to France after the World Cup, and Charlie Faumuina is following him, rugby writer Steve Hepburn looks at the destinations for other All Blacks after the tournament in England next year.

Waiting in the departure lounge:

Liam Messam: Has played at the top level for nearly a decade and will look to cash in as his body tires from all those hits. Japan beckons.

Jerome Kaino - had two years in Japan to rest his body but another season in the black jersey may be enough for his shoulders. Could look to go to Europe.

Ben Franks: Been floating around the scene for plenty of years without ever convincing. Ability to play both sides of the scrum would help his earning power in somewhere like France.

Tony Woodcock: Has been around seemingly since Adam was a boy. Worries over whether he can turn it on week in, week out for a club. A bit of a home boy but a cheque from a French club could get him out of his digs.

Dan Carter: Carter and playing in France seem a good fit. The metrosexual Cantabrian in Paris - we can see the Woman's Weekly lift-outs now. Has hardly racked up the miles on the paddock this year so will have plenty still left in the motor. The wages he will get could keep the Nuggets afloat for 10 years.

Jeremy Thrush: Younger and better in front of him, Thrush should cash in his chips and get a contract somewhere. Would be a good journeyman for any ambitious club in England.

Dithering at the ticket booth:

Keven Mealamu: Surely his All Black career is over after next year. May simply just retire as the motor looks to be seizing up at times. Could be tempted to play somewhere like Japan but his dodgy calves will have the last say.

Cory Jane: Is signed through until 2017 but contracts in professional sport are as solid and reliable as a regional airline service. Injuries catching up with him and may want to take wife and four kids to a new country for a bit of OE.

Colin Slade: With the likes of Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett around, and Slade not getting any younger, may want to leave his beloved Christchurch and head off. England perhaps?

Wyatt Crockett: if he plays like he did last weekend, then no-one would want him. But not a bad prop when on form and if John Afoa can be one of the highest-paid players in world rugby, then some club will want Crockett.

Israel Dagg: Although tied to home until 2017, may lack motivation after next year. Appears to have the whistle on the coach so if coach goes, he may head off to the land of the rising sun.

Not in the terminal

Richie McCaw: Surely will just hang up the boots and give his body a rest. May fly a few planes and just mooch around in the mountains. Political parties will come calling.

Conrad Smith: A qualified lawyer if you did not know. Fatherhood and age means it is unlikely he will see any action on the paddock after next year.

Staying on domestic routes

Smith and Smith Aaron and Ben are not going far.

Kieran Read Should assume the captaincy and keep working hard.

Sam Whitelock Mainstay of pack.

Owen Franks: As above.

Brodie Retallick NZRU will not let him leave at such a young age.

Sonny Bill Williams Aiming for Rio glory. Then a boxing career, movie stardom and reigniting the Virgin Galactic programme.
