Highlanders outside back Kurt Baker is hoping to take something from what has been a forgettable year.

The Taranaki man has been named in the New Zealand Sevens side to play in tournaments in Dubai and South Africa next month.

Baker has been released by the Highlanders to play in the two tournaments despite the franchise having started its pre-season training.

It will be the first time Baker has played sevens for the country since the World Cup in Moscow last year.

Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens acknowledged the support of the Highlanders in freeing up the 26-year-old to play in the tournaments.

''He's a very good sevens player. He's very fit and understands the game very well,'' Tietjens said.

''He certainly deserves his spot and was probably the player of the trial.''

Baker had a disrupted Super season with the Highlanders last season.

He was slapped with a six-week ban in April for a dangerous lifting tackle in a game against the Rebels.

Then, right near the end of the Super 15 season, he badly damaged his hamstring in a club game for Alhambra-Union and was out for most of the ITM Cup season with Taranaki.

He made a few appearances for Taranaki at the end of the season but did not start in the ITM Cup final.

Otago players Ton Ensor and Fa'asiu Fuatai did not make the cut to travel with the national squad.

Fuatai has injured a hamstring and Ensor will now concentrate on playing for Otago in the regional sevens tournament in Timaru on December 13.
