NZRU board changes plan

The New Zealand Rugby Union will attempt tomorrow to change its constitution and do away with zonal representation on its board.

A special general meeting of all unions will be held in Auckland.

The meeting will consider changes which will abolish zonal members and change to elected members.

Under the proposed board rules, five board members would replace the zonal members and could come from any union, provided they are nominated.

They are voted on by unions at the annual meeting.

These members will be known as elected board members.

Three independent members, who are appointed by a panel, and not unions, will be known as appointed board members.

The board also has a Maori representative.

The changes were brought about by a working party set up after this year's annual meeting.

All board members will be independent.
