This is one trophy that would stand out in any cabinet.

After at least 50 hours' work by engineer Danny Pryde, the trophy for the winning team at the Spartans 10s tournament on January 31 has been revealed.

Pryde was given an open licence by Spartans organiser Shane Waldron and has come up with a striking trophy of a Spartan helmet and weapons, the material sourced from an old driveshaft.

Waldron is thrilled with the result and said the trophy would be something to treasure for the winning team.

Pryde worked on it over over a five-month period. All up, it took more than 50 hours to come up with the striking trophy.

Sitting on an 18kg slab of granite, the trophy, which takes some lifting, will go to the winning side of the 16 teams entered.

There are also trophies for best player and best try at the tournament to be played at Miller Park.

Waldron said the tournament was now only days away and it was coming together well.

He said clubs had really supported the tournament and he could have accepted another 10 teams.

The first game will be played at 9am and the semifinals and final late in the afternoon.

Clubs from Southland, Central Otago, Oamaru and Dunedin have entered.

After the final, an auction will take place inside the Green Island Rugby Club rooms at Miller Park.

It will include the likes of signed All Black and Highlanders jerseys and a specially signed Sir Colin Meads All Black adidas ball.

The tournament has been set up to help injured rugby players and it is hoped to raise upwards of $10,000.
