Sevens: Six teams contesting Maheno tournament

It may be a long way from the sevens hotspots of Hong Kong and Wellington but Maheno, in North Otago, will hold a sevens tournament of its own tomorrow.

The second Maheno sevens tournament will be played on the settlement's domain and involves six teams all keen to have an early season hit-out.

The tournament had a successful launch last year, run by a couple of club members.

The organisation of tomorrow's event will be done by the Maheno Home and School committee, as a fundraiser for the local primary school.

The majority of the teams entered come from North Otago, with Kurow, Valley, Maheno and Old Boys lining up.

Kaikorai and Pirates are coming from Dunedin to compete.

Despite the dry summer, the ground at Maheno Domain is in tip-top shape and has been irrigated throughout the past couple of months.

Organiser Jo Hay said it was a bit disappointing more Dunedin clubs did not make the trip but many had only just started training and preferred to focus on full pre-season games.

Taieri won the competition last year but is not returning to defend the title tomorrow.

Kaikorai should be in the hunt, having performed well at the Spartans tournament last month, while Old Boys will be a chance.

The teams will be split into two pools and all are guaranteed to play at least three games.

The final will be played at 3pm.
