A group of guys getting together to play a bit of sevens.

Nothing unusual in that perhaps, but it is the why and how which makes the side, known as the Seafarers, something special.

The team, based in Dunedin, came about this year as a group of friends combined to play the sport they love and also remember a dear friend.

The Seafarers, which is mostly made up of university students and includes many players of Pacific Island origin, is due to play in the Pioneer Sevens in Gore this weekend.

The team, coached by Dunedin club player Jake Maiono, came about as a form of a tribute to friend Makisua Tanuvasa Tili.

The 17-year-old, who took his own life when still at school, would have turned 21 this year.

Makisua was a promising player, turning out for the Otago Boys' High School First XV in the midfield and loved to play the game.

His loss was deeply felt by friends and family, who wanted to remember him and help prevent any more suicides.

The players wear black armbands in all games to remember their friend, and have a yellow ribbon running through their jerseys.

Maiono said forming the team and playing was a good way to talk about their friend, and highlight that suicide can easily be prevented.

"In so many parts of life people stay silent because it is suicide. We thought the best way to get the message across was to play rugby,'' he said.

The group have met Makisua's mother and stepfather - Temukisa Tanuvasa Tili and Tom Nakubu - and talked about raising funds to assist suicide prevention and the family's loss.

The side played in the Woodend sevens tournament in Christchurch last month and reached the quarterfinals before losing to Canterbury Fijians.

The players had a minute's silence in one of their games at the tournament to remember their friend and hoped to repeat that at this weekend's tournament in Gore.

The team has trained twice a week over summer and has also played some practice games against the Otago sevens team.
