Southern made a strong start to its campaign with a crushing 54-0 win against Kaikorai at Bishopscourt today.

The visitors enjoyed overwhelming possession and territory in the opening 40min and led 35-0 at halftime.

Highlanders outside back Ryan Tongia scored three tries, while first five-eighth Ben Patston kicked extremely well, slotting three penalties and three conversions.

Tei Walden also featured heavily with two tries.

In the other games, Dunedin prevailed 20-19 in a thriller against Harbour at Kettle Park, University A beat Alhambra-Union 45-17, Zingari-Ricmond dispatched Green Island 48-18 and the defending champions Taieri had a comfortable 68-6 win against Pirates.
