Rugby: Tough challenges for high flying Taieri, Dunedin

A double round of club rugby games is completed this afternoon with all games kicking off at 2pm.

The Otago Daily Times takes a quick look at the games today with some big matches at Kettle Park and out on the Taieri Plain.

TAIERI v ZINGARI RICHMOND

Where: Peter Johnstone Park.

Form: Taieri started well with two easy wins but was held to a draw by Harbour on Thursday. Zingari Richmond began with a comfortable win over Green Island, then had a disappointing loss to Dunedin before its big forward pack won the match against Kaikorai.

The tip: Taieri has some quality backs and its loose forwards must stand tall against Zingari Richmond. The men from Montecillo have been working hard in pre season and look to have some good fitness.

The Colours' big pack has been impressive on the pick and go while big games are needed from the likes of backs Jamie Brown and Lachie Moore.

Taieri by about six points in a low scoring affair.

DUNEDIN v UNIVERSITY A

Where: Kettle Park.

Form: Dunedin is unbeaten, although it only just got up against lowly Green Island in its last game. University A has two wins, either side of a loss to Harbour.

The tip: Dunedin has rather squeaked its way to three wins. But the men from Kettle Park know how to get over the finishing line. May miss their Highlanders today, who are training instead of playing club rugby.

The onus will be on the likes of first five eighth Greg Dyer and halfback Tyrone Davies.

University A has some injuries in its forward pack and is a tad young up front. But it has pace to burn out wide and will be looking to get the ball into the hands of its pacy backs.

University needs to get some quality pill in the right part of the ground to put Dunedin under some pressure.

Dunedin to get home by about 10 points.

GREEN ISLAND v SOUTHERN

Where: Miller Park.

Form: Southern is top of the table with three bonus point wins, albeit against three of the bottom sides. Green Island has lost all its three games.

The tip: Once again, Southern comes up against a side from the lower reaches.

Green Island had a forgettable start to the competition but there was sign of some life in a close run loss to Dunedin last Thursday.

The side has some strong runners but needs to take chances when they come along and build a bit of continuity.

Jackson Hemopo and Jamie Waller have been working hard for the Green Island side.

Southern has plenty of depth and will look to move the ball around.

Southern by more than a dozen, although Green Island should continue to improve.

HARBOUR v KAIKORAI

Where: Watson Park.

Form: Harbour has had a loss, win and a draw. Kaikorai has notched up three losses, although it went close against Zingari Richmond last Thursday.

The tip: The men from Port Chalmers were everybody's fancy team at the start of the season but have taken a while to get going. After an encouraging draw with Taieri, the home side should have too much power up front and pace out back for the visitors.

Kaikorai is a young team missing some experienced forwards. Having the likes of fullback Tony Ensor not available because of mysterious sevens commitments does not help matters.

Lee Allan is still getting over a head knock and when he returns is still up in the air.

Harbour should win this by a couple of tries at least.

ALHAMBRA UNION v PIRATES

Where: North Ground.

Form: Alhambra Union has one win, and lost its other two games. Pirates has competed well but has yet to grab a win.

The tip: The Alhambra Union side looks to move the ball around and will want to make the most of the pace it has in the backs.

The forwards are solid and never back down, so should get enough ball to put pressure on Pirates.

The Pirates front eight works hard and has a solid front row and Craig Millar is working his way back into form.

But its backs have to get better to match the home team.

Alhambra Union to win at home by about 10 points.
