Rugby: Crunch time arrives for Southern

Forget the first four games - it is the next three which could determine whether this Southern team can return the title to Bathgate Park.

Southern has made an impressive beginning with maximum points from four games and leads the competition with 20 points.

But at the back of their minds, the Magpies will be worried about those naps they have been taking during the second half of games.

And they are probably a little concerned that a gentle start to the campaign might not have positioned them that well for the torrid three weeks ahead.

''We are trucking OK. We are only playing well in patches still but we are starting to string things together,'' assistant coach Dion Lobb said.

''We've obviously got a tough run now, with Varsity, Dunedin and Taieri and that will be a good test for the lads.''

Southern smashed Kaikorai 54-0 and beat Pirates 31-3 in the opening two rounds.

But in the Easter doubleheader, it struggled to maintain its intensity for 80 minutes.

Alhambra-Union was dispatched 48-31 but won the final quarter 31-0. Green Island also rallied during the second half, scoring three tries.

Lobb said Southern was perhaps guilty of relaxing too much but both Alhambra-Union and Green Island deserved credit for improved second-half efforts.

''We don't see any team as an easy game. They all have their different challenges and different ways they play.''

Tomorrow's opponent is University and its strength is out wide, with the likes of dangerous centre Matt Faddes and winger Gavin Stark.

''I guess they will try to run our forwards around. That is how they generally play against us.

''We've tried to play with a different style this year ... but obviously, with the forward pack we have, we'll want to use them.''

Highlanders winger Ryan Tongia has added more bite to Southern's attack. He has scored six tries and is proving to be very elusive.

Tei Walden and Josh Ioane are dangerous ball runners as well, so Southern will seek to play a reasonably expansive game, within reason.
