Rugby: Spectacular clash likely, Brown says

The Lions are on the prowl.

But the Highlanders are hoping to have the bigger roar in Johannesburg tomorrow morning.

Whatever happens in South Africa, it is likely plenty of points will be scored. For a South African side, the Lions somewhat unusually like to throw the ball around.

With the Highlanders keen to use their fleet-footed and deadly backs it should be a good match to watch.

Highlanders assistant coach Tony Brown, speaking from South Africa yesterday morning, said he expected a spectacular game.

''Analysing the Lions, the way they play is sort of like the way we like to play. Hopefully, we just do it a little bit better than them,'' he said.

''They [Lions] have changed their style in the last three or four games. They are a lot more attacking. The have scored a lot more tries and have made some more line breaks.

''They will have a go from anywhere ... and they are a dangerous side.''

Brown said the Highlanders had been taking it pretty lightly since arriving in the republic, just trying to get clarity so they could deliver their best at game time.

''We are a close and tight team. Whenever we go on tour we enjoy each other's company and have a good time. That is a big part of Highlanders rugby and we believe it flows out on to the field.''

The Lions have made seven changes to their team, including bringing in big-kicking No 10 Marnitz Boshoff. That may indicate the Lions changing tack again and playing a kicking game.

Whatever they do, Brown has full confidence in his man running the show.

Talk about Highlanders first five-eighth Lima Sopoaga coming into All Black calculations was reflection of the fine form of the Highlanders No 10, Brown said.

''The thing that has impressed me the most about Lima is the control he has of the game. Just the way he wants to play. He brings confidence to the way he is running the team and that gives confidence to the players around him.''

Brown said come World Cup time, Sopoaga would be right in the mix.

The match looms as a important game for the Highlanders. It is the first of three matches on tour, and it will be great to get the trip off to a successful start.

Two sides above them - the Chiefs and the Bulls - have the weekend off, so it is a chance for the side to consolidate its position in the top six.

Brown claims the side is not looking at positions on the table, simply taking it game by game as it looks to put on the best performance possible.

Playing at altitude always has an impact on the lungs and legs so the entire bench is bound to get a run.

Lock Alex Ainley is still not fully recovered from a broken jaw and will not strip.

Loose forward Elliot Dixon is the lock cover and is likely to get on.

Dixon is an expectant father and may come home for the birth of his first child in the coming weeks.

Brown confirmed fullback and co-captain Ben Smith had passed a concussion test last week after being taken off the field against the Sharks.

He could have played on after the blow to the back of his head but the Highlanders opted to be cautious and keep him on the sideline.

The Lions have knocked off some good sides at home and know a loss will put a serious dent in any playoff hopes.

The Highlanders are no different.

Something has got to give.
