Rugby: Ten Maniototo players make premier squad

Maniototo was rewarded for its strong start to the club season when 10 of its players were named in the Central Otago premier squad.

The team will contest the Topp Cup against South Otago in Balclutha at Queen's Birthday Weekend.

Maniototo forwards Tim O'Neill, Andrew Hore, Charles Crutchley, Scott Sharpin and Josh Beer were named along with backs Carn Parata, Jack Wild, Mitchell Lake, Matt Holmes and Quinton Smith.

Two other top four teams, Arrowtown and Alexandra, had five and four players named respectively.

Former Topp Cup captain Aidan Winter, who has returned to Arrowtown this season after playing rugby in Germany, was included.

Alexandra winger Rory Campbell has been included after some stellar performances.

The Irishman scored 29 points in the jubilee match against Matakanui Combined, and scored 25 points last weekend against Upper Clutha B.

Surprisingly, Upper Clutha, the only other unbeaten side in the competition this year, had just three players named, one being standout veteran fullback Ben Purvis.

Some who might consider themselves unlucky not to make the squad are front-rowers Nic Gee (Matakanui Combined) and Cory Winstanley (Cromwell), who were both picked last year, and outside backs Kane Dodds and George Gilchrist (Upper Clutha), who have also played well.

The development squad was also named and that match will precede the premier game along with the under-14 game.

Teams are provisional and will not be finalised until the final practice on May 27.
