There will be motivation aplenty on both sides when Clutha and Clutha Valley clash at the Balclutha Showgrounds tomorrow.

Clutha, six points clear at the top of the table, will seek to maintain its good form from the opening round and nail down top spot in the competition.

The team will also try to provide a positive finish to a sad week for the club, which had the funeral of former patron and life member Ernie Muir on Wednesday.

Clutha Valley will have plenty of its own angles to talk about in the pre-game chat.

It has been a difficult start to the season for Valley, but it is coming off a good win over Owaka and will hope to maintain that form.

Clutha Valley's players will also be keen to prove a point or two. While Clutha had nine players named in the South Otago squad for the Topp Cup clash, Valley had just one.

On top of all that, Clutha Valley will chase an upset to celebrate the 100th appearance of utility back Aaron Gouman.

''I think Clutha Valley have really improved,'' Clutha coach Ben Keach said.

''They're always pretty tough in the forwards and they'll be keen to give us a good shot.''

Clutha is getting good mileage out of two key men, lock Kerrod Baldwin and goal-kicking back Rhys Harrold.

Halfback Jared Edwards and No 8 Simon Grant, who has returned from overseas, are also shaping as vital to Clutha's chances of going all the way this season.

''We're pretty pleased with how we're going, but we still haven't strung 80 minutes together. We tend to just have 40 or 50 good minutes,'' Keach said.

''The backs have been playing pretty well. Our lineout has been struggling a wee bit but the forwards are starting to get some good ball.''

Second-placed Toko (21 points) has the bye, so Heriot (17) will have an opportunity to get into second spot when it heads to struggling Owaka.

In the other game, Crescent is at home to Clinton.
