Rugby: John McGlashan defence key in win

A strong defensive effort saw John McGlashan College claim a handy 42-8 win over Waitaki Boys' High School in their Southern Wide Real Estate 1st XV competition match today.

John McGlashan coach Mike Idour praised his team's defence, crediting the looseforwards in particular. It was this defence that he believed was the difference between the two teams, as the game was not as one-sided as the scoreline would suggest.

He said Waitaki Boys' were committed, defended well and tried hard, but struggled to break through against a John McGlashan team which really "hit their straps".

However, it was McGlashan who were able to apply pressure through holding the ball for long periods and used the ball well to score tries.

In other results Dunstan High School beat Taieri College 53-12, Mt Aspiring obtained a bonus point in 23-21 win over Kavanagh College, Otago Boys High School were too good for St Kevins College, winning 53-17.

South Otago High School continued in their winning ways with a 40-24 win over Kings High School, who were able to obtain a bonus point.
