Rugby: Highlanders name same XV for final

This is a final and strange things can happen - teams can freeze and go into their shell.

But Highlanders coach Jamie Jospeh is predicting two sides who have been entertaining all season will continue in the same vein.

After all, why go into 10-man rugby when both teams have blossomed when moving the ball?

The Highlanders named their team yesterday and will field the same starting XV which took on and beat the Waratahs in Sydney last Saturday night.

There may have been a temptation to put flanker Shane Christie back into the starting side but Joseph has stuck with James Lentjes on the openside and Christie will remain in the reserves.

Goalkicker Marty Banks, who has recovered from a head knock, comes into the reserves to replace Trent Renata.

The Hurricanes' big injury concern centres on flanker Ardie Savea, who has a knee complaint.

He is bracketed with Callum Gibbins and is described as a 50-50 chance.

Joseph said the side had recovered well from the win over the Waratahs in the semifinal.

''The win in Sydney was physical but the guys have recovered a lot quicker than the previous week ... guys are fresh and ready, understand the challenge ahead and are really looking forward to it,'' Joseph said.

''I don't think you can change a hell of a lot in a week. The players are the ones responsible for executing these plays. The consistent trends from both teams will be the same in the weekend.

''There are a lot of similarities in the way we play. We look to move the ball. We have a slightly different approach in some ways ... Is it going to be a tactical battle ? I think it could be. But not as much as last week because we are similar.

''The whole field is littered with dangerous runners on both sides. So that comes back to having a good set piece. I think we came out on the right side of the ledger last week in that against the Waratahs, so that shows how important it is.''

It may be Nasi Manu's final game for the franchise but Joseph said the motivation ran deeper than that.

''Guys getting off the ground a bit faster and running a bit harder won't happen because Nasi is moving on. Nasi had his farewell a couple of weeks ago. That happens all the time these days. Nasi will be the first one to say he really wants to do it for the team."

He was confident his side would handle the occasion.

''One thing I will say about the last two weeks, we've had massive games, excitement. You go to the butcher's shop and you get all the excitement. Go to Sydney and deal with all that excitment. So, over the past two weeks, we've had to deal with that. We're sort of used it.''

Joseph was asked once again what had changed since 2013.

He said it was a different team now, and there was new coaching personnel.

The two Smiths, Ben and Aaron, are the only surviving members of the team which took the field in the final game of 2013.

Joseph was picking up the vibe of the support from the side's fans.

''I think you can feel a little bit of that. My friends and family say it is even crazier in Wellington. Whether that is a good or bad thing I'm not sure.

''They'll be feeling that. One thing about Dunedin, we can get in and do our training.''

''As far as the team is concerned we appreciate the support the team has had all year ... that game against the Chiefs a couple of weeks ago showed how much they appreciate us.''
