Rugby: Script played out to perfection for Dixon

It all went to plan for Elliot Dixon on Saturday night.

A winner's medal, a great try and a man of the match award.

Not a bad effort in his 50th match for the franchise.

He said the win came back to emptying the tank in the final game of the season.

''We just knew it was the last game of the season. After that we knew we could relax,'' he said.

''We are pretty stoked. We came in with 15 minutes to go and Nasi [Manu] just said we have got 20 minutes for the rest of the season. If you want to slacken off, then don't.''

Dixon was taken off with about 10 minutes to go and saw the final minutes from the sideline.

''When I got subbed, I thought we had it then with the drop kicks and with the way Marty was running around. But those last two minutes, I think those were the longest two minutes of my life.''

Dixon's try was a real ripper and gave the Highlanders a handy halftime lead.

''It was just pretty awesome. I just saw that white line and just wanted to get to it. I managed to see a couple of shoulders and carried them along.''

Another hero was first five eighth Lima Sopoaga, who steered the side around the park. The victory was still seeming hard to believe after the match.

''It still feels like a dream. Over the next couple of days and when we get back to Dunedin it will sink in,'' Sopoaga said.

''It was the highlight of my career, especially where I have come from since 2011. As a team everyone wrote us off and we could not front up here We have a saying one to 39 we could do it and we did it ... I would go through that all again to feel what I feel like now.

Sopoaga hails from Wellington and has family and friends living in the capital, many of whom were at the game on Saturday night.

That made the win extra special for the first five eighth.

''I had to get about 128 tickets for all the friends and family. I made my debut here and then to win a grand final here. You would not read about it. Sopoaga talked to family after the game to share the spoils of victory.

''There were a few tears and hugs. Grandma was pretty emotional. I could not have picked a better place to play a grand final.''
