Rugby: Trophy to tour the region

The Highlanders are taking their silverware on tour.

The franchise, following a street parade in Dunedin on Monday, has decided to take the Super rugby trophy on tour around the region.

The 28kg trophy will be taken to Placemakers stores throughout the southern region.

Placemakers is the community partner of the franchise.

Highlanders general manager Roger Clark said yesterday that at the game on Saturday and the parade on Monday, so many people, young and old, wanted photographs with the trophy that it just was not possible to give everyone an opportunity.

The best option was to take the trophy to as many towns in the region as possible over the next few days, he said.

No players will accompany the trophy because the team is disbanding, with players heading to national teams and provincial union.

Because the competition is changing format next year, the teams will be playing for a new trophy.

The Highlanders, as the last winners of the competition involving 15 teams, will get to keep the trophy.
