When the Highlanders won the Super Rugby championship earlier this month it was not just the players celebrating a season of hard work but also the background staff who helped make the win possible.

Highlanders physiotherapist and director of SportsMed Mosgiel Adam Letts said the atmosphere at the final was amazing and the game went quite quickly.

''It was an interesting game, the final. Apart from our secondary jobs like getting messages out on the field, we weren't really busy with a lot of injuries, which was great. It was such an intense game, but neither team were incredibly busy with injuries.

''The biggest thing for me is care of the players, so you have to try and not be too involved with the game and keep an eye on them. You don't want to get too invested in the game but certainly you want your team to win and it's always a lot easier at the end of the game if they've had a victory,'' Letts said.

On a typical game day, he would spend a few hours before the game strapping and working on players to help get them prepared for the game.

''We go to the ground about an hour before the game to do more strapping and preparation prior to kickoff. During the game we do more medical and first aid - assessing injuries. Post game we assess any injuries and try to see where guys are at and what we need to do the following week,'' he said.

The players were great to work with because they were very professional and there was a great team environment.

''There's great camaraderie between the players - they all get on, so it makes a huge difference. They're just generally a great bunch of guys to work with.''

In the weeks following the final Letts and the physiotherapy team continued assessing players so they could give information to the ITM Cup medical teams for the upcoming season.
