Rugby: John McGlashan win comfortably

First five-eighth Daine Lowery scored 23 points as John McGlashan College continued its good form with a 33-14 win over King's High School in the latest round of the Southern Wide Real Estate 1st XV competition.

John McGlashan team director Mike Idour was complimentary of both sides, although felt his team was in control throughout.

"I think it would be fair to say we were in control for all of the game really," he said.

"They [King's] really defended very, very well. They showed plenty of scoring potential and they scored two good tries. But I think we had control in the forwards, and in the backs in fact."

The foundation for the win was laid with a strong first half, with John McGlashan taking a 19-0 lead into the break. However, despite maintaining control, Idour felt the second half could have been better, as the team dropped in intensity and were reduced to 14-men for ten minutes.

"We let ourselves down in the second half. We let our intensity drop and got distracted by things we shouldn't have been involved with."

Josh Timu celebrated his 50th match for the side in style, scoring a brilliant try under the posts after bumping off three defenders. That came at a crucial time, right after King's had crossed for their second try.

Lowery crossed the line once himself, while adding three conversions and four penalties, while Sam Darling scored a try too.

In today's other top six matches South Otago High School beat Dunstan High School 36-27, while Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV ran out 36-13 winners over Waitaki Boys' High School.

The bottom section of the competition saw Taieri College beat Otago Boys' High School 3rd XV 25-22, while Kavanagh College claimed a 34-20 win over Mount Aspiring.
