Alexandra is the champion of Central Otago rugby for the first time since 1994 with a 23-20 win over Maniototo at Ranfurly this afternoon.

The visitors dominated first half possession and led 20-8 at halftime scoring two tries to wing Sam Malcolm and centre Simon Lloyd.

Maniototo made plenty of mistakes in the match which Alexandra was able to capitalise on.

With five to play, the home side drew even at 20-20 with a try to no 8 replacement Josh Beer.

Alexandra wing Rory Campbell stepped up to kick the winning goal from 35m with time almost up.

It was the first loss for Maniototo this season.

Alexandra 23 (Sam Malcolm, Simon Lloyd tries; Rory Campbell 3 pen, 2 con) beat Maniototo 20 (Sam Pringle, Quinton Smith, Josh Beer tries; Charlie Hore con, pen). Halftime: 20-8.
