Pirates jumped out of the blocks and built a healthy lead to win the women's club final for the second year in a row on Saturday.

Playing at home at Hancock Park in front of a good crowd, Pirates used its strong forwards and ability to hang on to the ball to dominate University for long periods of the game.

The Pirates women were experts at recycling the ball, and although University put up some solid defence and showed plenty of courage in the tackle, the weight of possession eventually led to the home side scoring.

University never gave up, and scored a couple of nice tries in the second half. But Pirates had a healthy halftime lead and the students would have needed a mighty comeback.

Pirates grabbed the ball from the kick off and seemed to have a monopoly of the ball for the first 30 minutes.

First five eighth Larissa Muir knocked over a couple of penalties and then, about halfway through the first half, fullback Kathryn Kirby was on the end of the Pirates backline and scored the opening try.

Five minutes later, centre Greer Muir crashed over as she used speed and bulk to get across.

The tries kept coming from Pirates as prop Gemma Tuhega crossed for the third, although there was a blatant knock on missed in the lead up to the try.

University managed to get on the board right near the end of the half with a Megan Manson penalty.

The students spent a large period of the second half near the Pirates tryline and were rewarded with a couple of tries.

Impressive centre Rian Sanerive went through a gap to score about halfway through the second half and Manson crossed after fighting off a couple of defenders on the tryline.

But Pirates had the last say when winger Tina Moa'atane scored right at the end of the game.

No8 and captain Angie Sisifa got round the field and the Pirates tight five worked hard all game, making some big metres in taking the ball up off the ruck.

Greer Muir ran hard at centre and fullback Kirby was lively.

Flanker Georgia Mason was outstanding for University, picking up plenty of ball in the rucks and mauls and not shirking anything on defence.

Lock Kate Smith also worked hard and Michaela Baker showed some nice touches in the inside backs for University.

The two sides will provide plenty of players for the Otago Spirit side, which kicks off its season later this month.
