Rugby: Winner's mentality starts now for Otago

The next and perhaps most significant step in Otago's ITM Cup preparations takes place on the southern coast this afternoon.

Otago will take on neighbour Southland in Riverton today in its last game before the ITM Cup kicks off.

As far as Otago coach Cory Brown is concerned, this is a game to win.

So often pre-season games are often seen as getting combinations together, improving in the set piece.

The result is often seen as something secondary.

But Brown is having none of that.

He wants to come away from Riverton today with a win along with the mandatory good performance.

''The result does matter. You don't go into these games to lose. We want to have that type of mentality where we have a winner's mentality,'' Brown said.

''Go out and win every game that we play.''

An Otago side, playing as the Sassenachs, beat a shadow Southland side 10 days ago but both sides have made some significant personnel changes for today's match.

Southland welcomes back Super rugby players such as Jamie Mackintosh and Josh Bekhuis, while new Otago skipper Liam Coltman will make his first appearance in an Otago jersey this season.

Coltman joined up with the side on Monday after a leave period following his Highlanders season.

Brown said Coltman was a simple choice as skipper.

''He is the most experienced guy in the team. He has a real presence about him and the other players have a lot of respect for him. He is coming off an outstanding year for the Highlanders where he would be considered unlucky not to make the All Blacks.''

Brown said apart from bagging a win, he was looking to make progress in several areas.

The side had performed well in the close loss to Tasman but there was always something to work on.

Receiving kick-offs was something to improve on, as was the ability to clear its own line and have clear combinations on defence.

The side had been together for more than a week and Brown said the attitude was great.

The side for today contains 11 changes to the side that played Tasman.

Fullback Tony Ensor stays in the No15 jersey and Matt Faddes remains in the team but is shifted to the right wing.

Jack Wilson will start on the left wing again but there is a new midfield combination with Jayden Spence and Tei Walden teaming up.

Fletcher Smith will form a new inside back combination with Josh Renton.

Ratu Dawai gets a run at No8. Brown said Mika Mafi had had a heavy workload and needed a rest.

Josh Dickson starts on the blindside with an all Zingari-Richmond locking pair in Joe Latta and Blair Tweed.

Prop Craig Millar will pull on the blue and gold jersey for the first time since 2013.

Southland has included former Otago back Kieran Moffat at centre and Kaikorai outside back Sean Conner is on the right wing.

Veteran Tim Boys fronts up for another season at openside flank following a disrupted playing stint in Ireland, while the promising Bill Fukofuka is at No8.

Otago will head to the Catlins after the match for a camp for a couple of days.

They will mix training with some community engagements in South Otago before heading back to Dunedin late on Friday.
