Rugby: Could Thorn play for Reds?

The Queensland Reds might have signed Brad Thorn as a coach but Samu Kerevi says the dual-code warrior would be welcomed with open arms by the players as an emergency back-up at lock.

Thorn has joined the Reds as a forwards coach for their elite development squad but the 40-year-old only officially retired halfway through this year and could be enticed into playing on for another season.

Queensland has Wallaby Rob Simmons and new recruit Caydern Neville lined up as starting locks but is lacking depth in that position following an ACL injury to Kane Douglas at the World Cup.

"A lot of the boys have been saying that - since Brad Thorn's here, we can just sneak him in if he's not too bored coaching," said Kerevi.

The Reds need as much on-field experience as they can get right now, with captain James Slipper not expected to recover from shoulder surgery until at least May and big names Quade Cooper, Will Genia and James Horwill now plying their trade in Europe.

Thorn actually approached the Reds and the Waratahs about playing as an import this year but was knocked back by both.

"He's still looking fit. Fingers crossed, you never know," Kerevi said.

"We brought him as a coach and whatever they have plans for him, I fully support it.

"It's unfortunate that Douglas got injured and Slipper's going into surgery but we're trusting the depth that we have and backing each one of the boys."
