It is still blue, with a hint of maroon and splashes of gold.

The new Highlanders jersey for the 2016 season - modelled by loose forward Elliot Dixon - was released in a launch in Auckland yesterday and it is basically the same as last season.

Blue is once again the predominant colour.

Adidas New Zealand country manager Quentin Bleakley said the new Highlanders jersey paid homage to the unique and rugged landscape of southern New Zealand.

Eight peaks stretch across the upper torso and chest area of the jersey to signify the eight districts of the Highlanders region.

The design also resembles a tartan sash worn by traditional Scottish Highlanders.

The five new jerseys for the five New Zealand franchises were designed in conjunction with Maori All Blacks kaumatua Luke Crawford and former Dunedin artist Dave Burke.

The alternative playing jersey will be unveiled in February.

The other four jerseys have slight tweaks to them but still maintain the same colours as seen when the competition was first launched 20 years ago next season.

It is not known how many different jersey designs each franchise have been through in that period.
