Rugby: Super Rugby jersey prices slashed online

They may have been on sale for only three days, but the 2016 Super Rugby jerseys are already on offer on AliExpress.com for a fraction of their retail price.

Jerseys for all five New Zealand conference teams, were listed for sale on the popular Chinese e-commerce site a mere two days after the new designs were unveiled by adidas.

They are selling for $US22.09 ($NZ32.63), a bargain compared with the official jerseys which sell on the adidas website for $150.

A spokeswoman for adidas said the company took any example of counterfeiting seriously.

"At this stage we need to understand exactly what's going on with regard to the jerseys available for sale on this website," she said. "Adidas NZ has engaged our brand protection team, who is investigating this issue on our behalf."

Counterfeiting was an issue faced by many desirable brands around the world, she said.

"Adidas maintains a very high standard of control and quality throughout our production and supply chain, so New Zealand customers can rest assured that any products they purchase through reputable retailers here in New Zealand are the genuine article."

An investigation into the sales of the jerseys on AliExpress was likely to take some time, she said.

"In the meantime, we strongly recommend that fans purchase their Super Rugby merchandise from retailers they know and trust or from adidas.co.nz."
