Rugby: Otago winless at national sevens

Otago went winless at the national sevens tournament in both the men's and women's sections.

After scoring early in their first game against Wellington, the men's team conceded two tries before a late penalty took the score to 17-7, ending Otago's hopes of a win.

A 22-19 loss to pool-winners Taranaki followed, before a fightback saw them finish with a 26-19 loss to Hawke's Bay, after trailing 19-0 at the break.

The women's team were well-beaten in their first two games, going down 27-7 against Counties-Manukau and 24-0 against Wellington.

They then mustered a 14-all draw against North Harbour on the back of two outstanding tries from Gayle Broughton.

In their final game they were then swept away by Waikato in a 33-12 loss, after leading 12-0 early.

Neither team qualified for the Cup section in the knockout stages.
