Rugby: Otago players in action

There were two Otago players running around Westpac Stadium in the sevens tournament over the weekend but neither of them was wearing the black jersey.

Former Otago loose forward Hugh Blake lined up for the Scotland side which went to the bowl final before losing to Samoa 19-7.

It has been a roller-coaster ride for Blake since he left Otago at the end of the 2014 season to play in Scotland.

After delays with his passport, he joined the Edinburgh club and was then surprisingly picked for the Scottish Six Nations squad last season.

He did not play a game in the tournament and was then moved to the Glasgow club, the other professional side in Scotland.

He then started playing sevens for his adopted country and continued with that over the weekend.

Otago winger Jack Wilson played for England at the tournament and took a full part in the event, part of an English side which lost to Fiji in the playoff for third and fourth.

Wilson had previously played sevens for New Zealand in 2012.

Wilson played 10 games for Otago last season on the left wing but had been living in England before that and had played for England in a sevens qualifying event in Exeter in the last northern hemisphere season.

He qualifies for England through his mother and is the son of former All Black hooker Brett Wilson.

England will not field a team at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics but will be part of a Great Britain team.

Also playing for Scotland was former Waitaki Boys' High School pupil Nick McLennan.

McLennan, a utility back, played for North Otago in 2006 and the left to play in Russia for a couple of years and now plays for Edinburgh where he qualifies for Scotland through his mother.
