Rugby: Highlanders taking a beach break

The Highlanders will hit the Manly beaches this week, safe in the knowledge they are well ensconced in the top reaches of the table and are getting players back.

The side will spend this week in Australia following its 30-26 win over the Waratahs in Sydney on Friday night.

Its next game is against the Rebels in Melbourne on Saturday night.

The side will move from its inner city base today and head to Manly for the week, before heading to Melbourne on Friday.

The Highlanders have won three of their first four games and sit fifth in the table, but coach Jamie Joseph was not getting too carried away.

"I think we are growing our game but we are only coming into round five or something, so it is still early days,'' Joseph said from Sydney yesterday.

"We could have won that first game but we have learnt from that. The most disappointing thing is all the injuries we have had. We have had 11 guys out already. We've had to get guys back playing sevens in Las Vegas and lost a few players in some positions.''

The good news for Joseph is most of the players unavailable for Friday night's game against the Waratahs are now fit and ready to go.

Lock Joe Wheeler, prop Josh Hohneck, second five-eighth Tei Walden and loose forward Dan Pryor all missed the Friday game because of concussion issues but are available for the match against the Rebels.

Winger Patrick Osborne is over his hip injury and available for selection, while loose forward Luke Whitelock has recovered from his knee strain.

Hooker Liam Coltman, who played his 50th game for the Highlanders on Friday, left the game early in the second half with a bruised thigh but should be right for Saturday night.

Marty Banks (hamstring) and Fumiaki Tanaka (calf) may play club rugby this Thursday to test their injuries.

The match against the Waratahs was a strange encounter.

The Highlanders went out to a commanding 30-0 lead just after the hour, before the Waratahs came thundering back to trail by just four points with seven minutes left.

The Highlanders hung on to claim the victory, although Joseph felt it should have been a much easier win.

"I was really impressed with the first two-thirds of the game. The players played particularly well and we put a lot of pressure on the Waratahs and worked our way well into the game.

"The last 20 minutes was disappointing, in the fact that we let the lead slip. You have to give them credit, though. Sometimes it is hard when you play against a team which has nothing to lose and they try things and it comes off for them.''

Joseph had also used some players from the bench.

"When you are 30 points up it is a chance to put some guys on. The guys that came on have to be trusted they will do the job.''

The Rebels will not be easy, after a 35-9 win over the hapless Sunwolves in Tokyo.

Former Highlanders loose forward Adam Thomson is playing No8 for the Rebels, having moved to Melbourne after a year with the Reds.

In other results over the weekend, the Bulls and Sharks drew 16-16 in Pretoria, the Crusaders beat the Kings 57-24 in Christchurch, the Reds and Blues drew 25-25 in Brisbane, the Lions beat the Cheetahs 39-22 in Johannesburg and the Stormers beat the Brumbies 31-11 in Cape Town.

In Buenos Aires yesterday, the Chiefs beat the Jaguares 30-26.
