Defending champion Old Boys opened the North Otago club rugby season in style with a 71-5 thumping of Valley at Weston today.

Rampaging lock Lio Havili and captain Ralph Darling each scored two tries as Old Boys ran amok from broken play.

Athletic Marist also started with a big win, scoring nine tries to none to beat Excelsior, a Citizens Shield finalist last year, 59-6 in Oamaru.

At Maheno, the home side and Kurow could not be separated, their game finishing in a 20-20 draw.
