Rugby: Highlanders focusing on the basics

It is a simple game at the end of the day.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph says the team has just been working hard and concentrating on the basics as it begins what is shaping as a crucial three-week block of games.

He was pleased with the response to the close loss to the Sharks last week.

"I think the players and the coaching team have had a look at that performance and while we were happy with our effort we let ourselves down with the execution. We have worked really hard on getting that right,'' Joseph said.

"That is just through practice. You tell the players not to put so much pressure on themselves. Just practise catching and passing.''

He said players just had to get back to what they were playing for.

"It is just back to basics, really. Guys have talked about enjoying their rugby, enjoying preparing every day and going out there and if that is enough to get us across the line then so be it. But if it is not then we just have to work that wee bit harder and smarter. But I think we are in a good spot.

"One thing around Super rugby and this team is there is a lot of training every week. You can't really replicate composure in training so that is a tough thing. A lot of guys have not played Super rugby at this level and they are learning about that. So we have to rely on our more experienced players a bit.''

Joseph has made some changes to his side to take on the Brumbies, some through necessity and others to bring some players back into the mix.

Rob Thompson comes into the side for the suspended Jason Emery.

Patrick Osborne comes back into the starting side and Jack Wilson moves to the right wing. Matt Faddes moves to the bench.

Waisake Naholo is scheduled to play for the Harbour Hawks against Zingari-Richmond at Montecillo.

In the forwards, lock Alex Ainley gets a start and Joe Wheeler moves to the bench.

Fumiaki Tanaka and Hayden Parker continue on the bench as Marty Banks struggles to get over a rib injury.

Joseph may have been tempted to give loose forward Gareth Evans a chance but he cannot force his way into the squad of 23.

Dan Pryor continues as the loose forward reserve.

Joseph said the side was looking forward to heading to Invercargill.

"We have always played well in front of their southern fans.''

The weather is forecast to be fine for the game.

The side plays the Chiefs next week and then the Crusaders on May 13, which looms as a crunch run of games.

The Brumbies have ruled out Wallabies captain Stephen Moore, who is carrying a calf injury.

Winger Joe Tomane is out for eight weeks with a knee injury.

It is not all bad for the Brumbies, who welcome back David Pocock, who has served a three-week suspension.

The Highlanders travel to Invercargill. The Brumbies have been in Queenstown since Wednesday.
