Rugby: Strong first half helps Dunstan to win

Dunstan High School were too good for Mount Aspiring College today, claiming a 46-12 win in the opening round of the Otago Secondary Schools' First XV competition.

Dunstan coach Jacque Kemp said his team did the majority of their damage towards the end of the first half, scoring seven tries in a 15 minute blitz to lead 41-0 at the break.

Up until that point it had been a close affair, with Mount Aspiring shutting down the Dunstan backs, holding them to just two penalties, he said.

Kemp praised Mount Aspiring's fight back in the second half, where they scored two tries and held Dunstan to one. The game tightened up and Dunstan struggled to get the ball, although they had cleared their bench at halftime.

Kemp said there was some "very good running rugby" on display and while pleased with the win, his team was not getting ahead of themselves.

They meet Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV next week, which he said would be a good "test" to see where they are at.

In other games South Otago High School notched up a bonus point in beating King's High School 26-5. Waitaki Boys' High School were too good for arch-rivals St Kevin's College, winning 62-0, while Kavanagh College pipped Taieri College 15-14 in the local derby.
