Rugby: Waitaki Boys’ forwards lay foundation for win

In the televised battle at Alexandra on Saturday, Waitaki Boys' High School ran out a convincing winner.

The match between the Oamaru school and Dunstan High School was televised on Sky Television and both sides tried to lift for the occasion in the premier schools competition clash.

But it was the heavier Waitaki Boys' High School side which gained ascendancy almost right from the kick-off and ran out a comfortable winner, 48-15.

It led 24-8 at the break.

The home side was out-muscled by a well-drilled Waitaki team, which had a powerful scrum and was almost winning tightheads at will.

Dunstan - when it got the ball - looked lively but it lacked size and could not get enough ball to get going.

It played with the wind in the first half and then struggled going into it in the second half.

Dunstan High School first five-eighth Max Duncan tried hard and showed some nice touches while flanker Beau Meeham was all over the park.

With the win, the Waitaki Boys' High School side cements its place in the top four.

It was Dunstan's first loss and leaves John McGlashan College as the only unbeaten team.

The College side had a big win, 94-0, over Taieri College.

In a match which failed to reach any sort of heights, King's High School did enough to beat Mount Aspiring College 10-3.

King's scored a try in the first half and another right near the end to confirm the victory in Dunedin.

King's was feeling the impact of a midweek game against Otago Boys' High School first XV and was slow to get any speed into its play.

Mount Aspiring College showed plenty of fight.

South Otago High School was another big winner, beating Kavanagh College 41-7 in Balclutha.

In the other game in the competition, St Kevin's hosted Otago Boys' High School second XV and the Dunedin-based school came away the winner, 27-13.
